Someone you have given love to and received love from has died. You are in mourning. You are bereft. To be "bereaved" literally means to be torn apart and to have special needs. Perhaps your most important need right now is to be compassionate with yourself. One way to care for yourself is to learn more about grief and mourning. We invite you to participate in the Dawson Funeral Home support groups led by our grief facilitator, Judy Kidder.
The Empty Chair Support Group is intentionally designed for those who have experienced the death of a spouse; however, there are others who occasionally join. The program is eight sessions in length and meets once a week. We offer these sessions three times a year (winter, spring and fall). Each session begins at 6:30 p.m. and dismisses at 8:00 p.m. – usually on a Thursday.
Topics of discussion include: grief is bad for your health, dealing with anger, memories and much, much more. We use printed material, videos and audio to learn about the grieving process.
The Broken Branch Support Group is designed for parents who have experienced the death of their child. This group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The age of the child, or time since the death, are unimportant. We share helps and survival ideas from those who have had this experience. We also use multi-media in our quest to adjust to the new life without our children with us.
The Dawson Cares Series is a quarterly community event that is an open invitation program. Events are planned for content most relevant to issues effecting our senior population or those who have been touched by loss. The events are always free and all are welcome to attend. Watch for event announcements in the newspaper or on our website or ask Judy to give you a call.
Judy is also available on an as needed basis for more individual help. In addition, she has been very successful working with children at the funeral home, discussing grief in ways they can understand while easing fear and nervousness through education and compassion.
