Obituary for William J. McComas

– Lifetime city resident William J. “Bill” McComas passed away following a brave year-long battle with leukemia on Wednesday morning, April 2, 2014. He was 63.

Born on February 7, 1951 in East Liverpool, he was a son of the late Wirt and Virginia Rose McCoy McComas.

Bill was a 1970 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and left for Vietnam soon after his graduation, serving from 1971 to 1974 with the U.S. Army, followed by 23 years of service with the Ohio National Guard.

A true patriot, he remained a proud American for the rest of his life. He was involved in countless events and organizations to benefit the military, whether it was the Moving Wall at Thompson Park or raising funds to place a permanent marker in memory of a fallen brother. A life member and Vice-Commander of the VFW #66, he had been President of the Columbiana County Vietnam Veterans of America #40, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans #47, and also belonged to the American Legion Post #736 and the Brothers of the Blade 4th Squadron #107. In addition, he had been the P.O.W. and M.I.A. officer for many years. Bill had earned various medals for his service, and had been named Columbiana County Citizen of the Year in 1990.

His faith was of utmost importance to him, especially throughout his illness. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he was considered the “go-to guy”, serving as president of the church council, property committee, finance committee, and had also been the church liaison for Cub Scouts Pack #43.

Bill continued his college education at Bowling Green State University after serving in Vietnam, and later received his degree from Kent State University. He had been an overhead crane operator at the former Crucible Steel before joining the U.S. Postal Service in 1983, where he began as a letter carrier and retired in the general maintenance department.

He was happiest when he was helping others. A loyal supporter of the community – and especially those events which involved his kids – he had been a coach with the Bill Booth League, the East Liverpool Youth Soccer League, and had also served as a basketball, football and soccer coach at a variety of schools, including East Liverpool, Beaver Local, Southern Local and Wellsville. He made people feel they mattered, and he always had time to help a friend.

Surviving him at home is his wife and high school sweetheart, Darolyn Sue McComas, whom he married on August 19, 1972.

Together, they raised a family who made them immensely proud: Meghan Elizabeth Klenotic and her husband, Luke, of Ravenna; Michael Todd McComas and his wife, Charissa, and their daughters, Kiersten and Kayla McComas, of Apex, NC; and Matthew Sean McComas, of East Liverpool.

Bill is also survived by his sister, Sandra Rose Scurlock, of East Liverpool, and by his brothers, Robert F. McComas of Boardman; Charles E. McComas and his wife, Penny, of East Liverpool; and Kenneth D. McComas, also of East Liverpool, as well as a niece and two nephews. In addition, he is survived by his in-laws, Darrell and Marwynne Serafy of East Liverpool, a sister-in-law, Deborah Nicholson Och and her husband, Bill, of Lake Jackson, TX, and a brother-in-law, David Serafy of Groton, CT.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 4 until 8 p.m.

The Rev. Eric M. Edwards will officiate at a funeral service at St. John Lutheran Church at noon on Saturday. Friends may also visit from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where full military honors will be provided.

Those wishing to do so may send contributions in Bill’s name to St. John Lutheran Church, 400 Hill Boulevard, East Liverpool, Ohio 43920.
