Obituary for Raymond R. Tubbs

Cleveland Clinic Foundation molecular oncologic pathologist Raymond Roy Tubbs, D.O. arrived in Heaven early Saturday morning, April 19, 2014 at the age of 67. Dr. Tubbs, who had been battling cancer, died at the Cleveland Clinic, with his wife of nearly 45 years at his side.

He was born in Ithaca, NY, on August 23, 1946, the eldest son of the late Rev. Roy L. and Fern Tubbs. He grew up enjoying the mountains and the Colorado outdoors with his three siblings. Throughout his life, he demonstrated devotion in all facets of his life, but particularly his work, family, and his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine, he began his medical career in 1973 at the Cleveland Clinic, where he worked until the time of his death. His published work, including over 600 research articles in peer-reviewed publications, reflected his relentless pursuit of new ideas and discoveries that might make a difference for patients. He pioneered new tests to help diagnose and treat patients more accurately, and many of these tests are now standard medical practice. Those who worked and collaborated with him will continue to be inspired by his focused work ethic, love of learning, and integrity; and the many colleagues he mentored can now drive further progress, having learned from him.

As a loving grandfather, one of Ray’s greatest joys was to be a part of his three grandchildren’s lives. He was proud to see them thrive and thrilled to experience and enjoy time being with them. His two children will remember him as a devoted father and consistent example through life. He recently enjoyed traveling with his wife, but otherwise sustained a quiet modest life at home. Surviving him is his wife, Mary, daughter Alisa in Arizona, and son Matthew in Washington.

Ray Tubbs was a private, quiet man whose life declared God’s love. He believed Jesus Christ was his personal Savior and that his life should reflect his faith by obedience to God’s Word. He found comfort in his faith in the toughest times of his illness, and his wish was to share this comfort with others so they, too, could know God’s promise.

Pastor Matthew McAlvey will conduct a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Parkside Church, 7100 Pettibone Road, Bainbridge for family, friends and close colleagues. Ray’s body will be laid to rest in Colorado Springs, Colorado at a later date.
