Obituary for James L. Reed

Lifetime East Liverpool resident James L. “Jim” Reed, of Cartwright Street, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Jim, who had been ill a very short while, was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

He was born in East Liverpool on February 13, 1938, a son of the late Robert and Juanita Mackey Reed. His maternal grandparents, Lee and Helen Mackey, were the founders of Mackey’s Tavern in the East End of the city, which later became Fiorello’s Restaurant.

A 1955 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Jim had served from 1959 to 1963 with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was associated with G.M. Lordstown for many years, retiring from the assembly plant. He had a lifelong interest in cars, and loved re-building them in his free time.

Surviving him at home is his wife of 50 years, Nancy Bennett Reed. He also leaves behind a daughter, Kristi Viola and her husband, John, of Hamilton, MA.

A sister, Linda Briere and her husband, Ronald, of North Carolina also survives, as well as a sister-in-law, Sondra Newlun of East Liverpool.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Monday evening, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery.
