Obituary for Robert John Mecum

Robert John Mecum, 74, passed away surrounded by his family at his home at 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014.

Born in Keokuk, Iowa, on April 9, 1940, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary Ferris Mecum. From 1962-1969, he had served his country with the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine fleet, a position for which he was selected by Admiral Rickover.

Bob came to this area in 1971, where he was associated with Duquesne Light for over 30 years, serving as shift supervisor at the Shippingport nuclear plant. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Geneva College.

A member of Union Ridge Baptist Church in Rogers, Bob also belonged to the American Legion.

Surviving him at home is his wife, Lorraine Foss Mecum, whom he married on July 1, 1971.

He also leaves behind four daughters and three sons: Diana Stewart and her husband, Danny of Columbiana; Lorry Barnard and her husband, Joe, of Calcutta; Karen Perkins and her husband, Scott, of Sunbury, OH; Janice Adkins and her husband, Joel, of Canton; Tom Kelley and his wife, Starr, of Palmyra, Maine; Brian Kelley and his wife, Loura, of Interlachen, FL; and Sam Mecum and his wife, Ann, of East Liverpool.

There are 29 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, along with a sister, Karyl Tomberg and her husband, Marv, of Chicago. Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Courtois.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday (today), where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Randy Clark of the church officiating.

Burial will take place at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens.
