Obituary for Juanita Faye Banik (Thomas)

Juanita Faye Banik, formerly of Ambrose and Vine Streets in East Liverpool, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Calcutta Health Care Center, where she had resided recently. “Toots”, as she was affectionately known by her family and her many friends, was 83.

She was born in Midland, PA on August 16, 1930, a daughter of the late Joseph and H. Gaye Stump Thomas. A member of the Midland High School Class of 1949, she began working the day after her graduation as an x-ray technician at East Liverpool City Hospital, where she met her future husband, Joseph M. “Joe” Banik. Juanita worked for Commercial Decal and Ross Nursing Home while raising her family, and later was a private nurse’s aide for Dr. John Gard and family.

Juanita and Joe were married May 11, 1955 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Northside Church with a renewal of their vows by Pastor Larry Rose.

She attended Northside Church in recent years and loved spending time with her family, as well as her beloved cat, “Midnight”. Juanita and Joe also took great pride in caring for their eldest grandchild, Bradley, while his mother was serving in the U.S. Army.

Surviving her are two daughters: Kimberly Banik of East Liverpool, and Karen Bryer of Powell, OH, along with a son, Tom Banik and his wife, Julie, of Westerville, OH. There are five grandchildren: Bradley Banik and his companion, Kortney Flowers; Roberto Bryer; Halie Bryer; Alex Banik and Ben Banik. Juanita also leaves behind a great-granddaughter, Arabella Faye Banik.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 2007 and by her son, Richard R. “Rick” Banik, who passed away in 1975. Her only brother, Bill Thomas and his wife, Jeanne, also preceded her in death.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, with Pastor Larry Rose of the church officiating, immediately followed by a luncheon at Northside Church. Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
