Obituary for Alvin O. Gilbert



Columbiana, Ohio- Alvin O. Gilbert, 88, formerly of Simmons Street in East Liverpool, who now resides on Columbiana – Lisbon Road in Columbiana, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 11:15 a.m. at the Salem Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born September 21, 1926 at Smithfield, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Lonnie and Mabel Ervin Gilbert. A resident of this area since 1942, he was a retired crane operator at McIntosh Hemphill Steel in Midland, Pennsylvania for 38 years. He had also worked at the former Crucible Steel Company.

A WWII veteran of the United States Navy serving in the Pacific, he was a member of the Pleasant Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. Harmer Gilbert, whom he married September 21, 1949, at home. He also leaves behind four daughters, Deborah Gilbert of Lisbon, Ohio, Kathryn Smith and her husband, Gary of Saegertown, Pennsylvania, Nancy Rich and her husband, Joseph of Leetonia, Ohio, and Cynthia Stacey of Kensington, Ohio; and one son, Stephen Gilbert of Wilmington, North Carolina.

There are twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition, he leaves behind one sister, Sheila Sayre and her husband, Okey of Lawrenceville, West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Boley and Mary Haddock; and six brothers, Glen Gilbert, Charles Gilbert, Gerald Gilbert, Lyle Gilbert, Bernard Gilbert, and Loye Gilbert.

Pastor Bill Wagner of the church will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. Friends may visit the family from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Burial will be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell, West Virginia.
