Obituary for Fay L. Hillberry (Ward)

Fay L. Ward Hillberry, 82, went home to be with Jesus at 12:16 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014 while surrounded by her loving family at her residence on Middle Beaver Road, Lisbon.

A daughter of the late William W. Ward and Dorothy Beedham Ward Stuba Butch, she was born in Youngstown, Ohio on October 17, 1931. Her faith was always of utmost important to her, and she acknowledged her new birth in Christ on October 4, 1998. Fay was also preceded in death her two step-fathers, Alfred Stuba and Felix P. Butch.

Fay was a 1950 graduate of David Anderson High School, and immediately went to work for the Columbiana County Auditor, and later McMillian Abstract Company at the County Court House. She had also worked as an operator for Western Union in Alliance and Youngstown at one time, and had cooked and driven the school bus for Robert Bycroft School and the Sheltered Workshop. Fay had also been a rural mail carrier out of the Lisbon Post Office before moving to Delray Beach, Florida in 1976.

Once in Florida, she was associated with the Board of Realtors, and was secretary of the R.O. Priest Century 21 Real Estate Agency, eventually earning her real estate license. Fay had also worked for A.G. Holley State Hospital in Lantana, FL as Supervisor of Communications before being transferred to the West Palm Beach Branch Lab. She eventually retired from the State of Florida in April, 1995 and returned to this area.

Always happiest when she was busy helping others, Fay sang in the Youngstown College Dana School of Music Concert Choir and in various church choirs for weddings and funerals. A longtime member of Lake Mount Church of Christ, she was involved in countless activities and committees there, and especially valued her associations with the Home Bible Study group, as well as the Card Ministry of Encouragement. She had written poetry that was published in three different anthologies, was a member of the International Poetry Society, and was currently working on a book of children’s stories, mostly for her grandchildren. She loved people and appreciated nature, and also enjoyed traveling with the Tri-State Explorers Club, and had friends wherever she went.

Fay was preceded in death by her husband, James Brandt Hillberry, in August of 1997. They had been married on August 9, 1951 and had raised their family in this area.

Surviving her are her children: Dennis J. Hillberry and his wife, Cindy, of Lisbon; and Gary B. Hillberry and his wife, Pam, of Rogers, and Fay Marie Nelson of South Carolina. There are six grandchildren: David Hillberry and his wife, Amanda; Todd Hillberry and Chris Sturgell; Amanda Varela and her husband, Otto; Jesse Hillberry; Melinda Francois, and Pamela Nelson, along with great-grandchildren: Courtney Fay Darrow, Destiny Fay Darrow, Kaylee Fay Darrow, Kyle Teak Davison, Caitlin Varela and Elijah Hillberry. Two grandchildren preceded Fay in death, Brandy Freeman and Jessica Kate Nelson.

A brother, William E. Ward and his wife, Claire, resides in Boynton Beach, FL.

Memorial services will be held at Lake Mount Church of Christ at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, with Minister Roy Seaux of the church officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Following the service, friends and family will gather at the church for a continued time of fellowship.

Fay will be laid to rest beside her husband at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

The Dawson Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

“Only one life t’will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
