Obituary for Mary K. Betteridge (McGaughtry)

Mary K. McCaughtry Betteridge peacefully passed away at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Assisted Living Ministries Home in East Liverpool. She was 94.

A daughter of the late John C. and Beryl Hogue McCaughtry, she was born April 20, 1920. She was graduated in 1938 from East Liverpool High School and had been a proud member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. Following high school, Mary was graduated from Ohio Valley Business College, mentored by Marie Stier.

She began working at a young age for Francis P. White Insurance Company, and later became associated with First Federal Savings & Loan, where she worked as an executive secretary for over 20 years.

A longtime member of First United Methodist Church in East Liverpool, Mary also enjoyed her memberships in Quota Club and Triangle Seniors, and was a friend to all.

She married Richard J. “Dick” Betteridge on June 1, 1947, and together they loved traveling later in their lives, and had wintered in Riverwoods Plantation in Florida for many years. Dick preceded her in death on March 30, 1993.

Surviving is her daughter, Katherine “Kathy” Steele and her husband, Jon, of East Liverpool. Mary was also the proud grandmother of five grandsons: Brian Fatah Steele, Adam Bradford Steele, Nathan John Charles Steele, Jordan Matthew Steele and his wife, Marissa, and Quintin Jon Steele.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her son, John C. Betteridge, who passed away on September 8, 1979. She was also preceded by a sister, Jane Emmerling, and by a brother, Kenny McCaughtry.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday, where the family will be present from 3 to 6 p.m.

Private burial services will take place at Riverview Cemetery.

Mary’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Brenda, Maria, Dee and all the other caregivers at Assisted Living Ministry Service, as well as Rudy, Jean, Bus, Ed and the other residents who were good friends to Mary.
