Obituary for Shirley G. Hayes (Wilson)

Shirley G. Wilson Hayes, 84, went home to be with the Lord at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Calcutta Health Care Center following a brief illness.

Born in Smithfield, Ohio on January 28, 1930, she was a daughter of the late William Wilson and Mary Veney Wilson Blackburn. A 1948 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Shirley had been a retail sales clerk in several East Liverpool businesses at one time. For many years, she had worked with the J. Nessly Porter family, and had remained close to daughter, Peggy. Shirley loved caring for others, and had helped administer the food distribution program at the Community Resource Center under Vera Valentine.

Raised as a member of the Sheridan A.M.E. Church, she belonged to the Second Baptist Church, where she was currently serving as Deaconess. Affectionately known as “Mother Hayes”, her sweet spirit was loved by all. Shirley also enjoyed the friendships she made through the various senior citizens groups, especially Area Seniors. She also volunteered 35 years of service with the Columbiana County Board of Elections.

Surviving are her two daughters, Rhonda Jarrett of East Liverpool, and Jacqueline Smith, of Reynoldsburg, OH, and a daughter-in-law, Jackie Hayes, also of East Liverpool. There are seven grandchildren: B.J. Jarrett, Vala Jarrett, Jennifer Jarrett, Lauren Smith, Stephanie Hayes, Janai Hayes and Janelle Hayes; 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson surviving as well as a special nephew, Michael Wilson of Florida.

Shirley was preceded in death by a son, Stephen D. Hayes, who died on March 15, 2013, as well as a grandson, Aven Jarrett, a sister, Vivian Coyle, and a son-in-law, Tom Jarrett.

Services will be held at the Dawson Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with Pastor Ernest Peachey of the Second Baptist Church officiating. The Area Seniors will provide a memorial tribute during the service.

Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Shirley will be laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery, after which time family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a time of fellowship.
