Obituary for Adaline Loretta McHenry (Johnson)

Adaline Johnson McHenry passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015, with her loving family nearby. Adaline, longtime resident of Armstrong Lane in East Liverpool, died at the Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester, where she had resided in recent years.

She was born at home in Wellsville on August 3, 1920, a daughter of the late Chester Clyde and Priscilla Loretta Scott Johnson. A 1938 graduate of Wellsville High School, she was a life member of the Wellsville Alumni Association.

Following high school, she was graduated from the East Liverpool City Hospital School of Nursing with the Class of 1941 and began her career as a nurse for the Edwin M. Knowles China Company. In 1955, she joined the staff at East Liverpool City Hospital, where she worked in both the Obstetrics Department and the Emergency Room, retiring in 1982 as supervisor of the night shift.

Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she belonged to Emmanuel Presbyterian Church for many years. In 2004, she was honored as a Heritage Member at the church. In the earlier years of her life, Adaline was also a member of the Child Study Club, and volunteered with the East Liverpool City Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, where she worked as a surgical hostess and was a quiet comforter to many. In her free time, she loved sewing and crafts and collecting antiques – and always looked forward to her get-togethers with her “Rowdy Bunch” Bridge group.

She was preceded in death on January 19, 2007 by her husband, Harvey N. McHenry, whom she married on August 31, 1946 in Rocky River, Ohio. Together, they shared many years of happy times and had great pride in the family they raised.

Surviving are two daughters and a son: Sue Irwin and her husband, Phil, of East Liverpool; Louise “Weasie” McHenry Roberts of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Norman H. McHenry and his wife, Lucy, of Wilson, North Carolina.

Known as “Kemmy” to her seven grandchildren, she cherished her time with them: Patrick Irwin and his wife, Kajeen, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Christopher Irwin and his wife, Valerie, of Canton, Ohio; Kimberly Irwin of Lexington, Kentucky; Anne Roberts Knudson and her husband, Erik, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Robert “Rob” Roberts, also of Charlotte; Brett McHenry of Greenville, North Carolina; and Ryan McHenry, also of Greenville. Also surviving is a great-granddaughter, Jillian Irwin of Canton, as well as a niece, Norma Bell Spademan and a nephew, James Bell. An infant brother, Kenneth Johnson, preceded her in death.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Thursday, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Rev. Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Following the service, family and friends will gather at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in care of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 767 Park Blvd., East Liverpool, Ohio 43920.
