Obituary for Lea Gail Hoffrichter (Lea Altman)

Lea Gail Altman Hoffrichter, 94, of East Liverpool passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born into the extraordinary family of the late Harry and Flora Altman in 1920 and grew up on Fourth Street in downtown East Liverpool. She was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1936, after skipping two grades because of academic achievement.

There were two other sisters in the Altman home: the late Joan Altman Harris graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and became a concert violinist, and Marion Altman Monheim was graduated from Wellesley College and became a prominent figure in Pittsburgh where she resides.

Lea Gail was graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1940, then married her husband of 69 years Joseph J. Hoffrichter, D.D.S. Dr. Hoffrichter passed away March 18, 2010.

Lea Gail and Joe made some 35 trips around the world and believed that travel was one of the highest forms of education.

The couple had three children: Dr. Marc Hoffrichter and his wife, Cindy, of East Liverpool; Dr. Eric Hoffrichter of Columbus, Ohio; and Ronna Berland of Los Angeles, California. Also surviving are seven granddaughters: Valerie Berland, Wendy Berland Simon, Jennifer Ericson, Megan Hernandez, Andrea Cohn, Erica Butcher and Rachel Hoffrichter, as well as seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, husband and her sister, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Beverly Hoffrichter.

A private family graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be sent to the East Liverpool Fawcett Community Foundation, P.O. Box 458, East Liverpool, Ohio 43920.
