Obituary for Florence Melvin (Thompson)

FLORENCE THOMPSON MELVIN, 93

CLEVELAND – Florence Thompson Melvin, formerly of East Liverpool, currently of Denison Avenue, Cleveland, died at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland, at the age of 93.

A daughter of the late Charles C. and Mary Sophrona Smith Thompson, she was born at home in Fredericktown on February 6, 1921.

A Christian by faith, she was a retired inspector with Alcoa.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Richard Floyd Melvin, who died on March 11, 1988.

Florence is survived by her daughters, Deborah Martin and Marilyn Holoway, and by her son, Richard “Gary” Melvin, all of Cleveland. Another daughter, Kathy Gumino, preceded her in death.

There are six grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding Florence in death were her siblings: Frances Garey, Mary Beatty, Curtis Thompson, and Raymond D. Thompson, and a grandson Zachariah Melvin.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Sunday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Pastor Norm Eckert of the Beechwood Free Methodist Church will officiate at a service to be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Mount Zion Cemetery in Negley.
