Obituary for Janice Southall (Stokes)

Janice Stokes Southall, of East Liverpool, passed away at the home of her daughter on February 8, 2015 following a lengthy illness. She was 92.

Born in Middlesex, North Carolina, December 12, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Theophilus O. and Anna Pridgeon Stokes. She was graduated from Shaw University where she was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was a member of the Sheridan AME Church, where she held virtually every office and position including superintendent of the Sunday school, treasurer and stewardess board member.

She worked for many years as one of the first teachers at Robert Bycroft School. She later taught school in the East Liverpool City School District. She was a member of the John Washington Chapter #68 Order of the Eastern Star, Lady Shriners, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a group leader of Camp Fire Girls and a founding member the Tri-State Black Research Historical Team. She participated in a local support group for families and children affected by disabilities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Southall, whom she married August of 1946. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Anna Marie Southall , a son, William Charles “Billy” Southall, a sister, Jewell Dean, and four brothers, Oliver M. Stokes, Henry Leon Stokes, Booker T. Stokes and William M. Stokes.

Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Morris, and her husband Eric, of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, and two sons, Jeffrey L. Southall and Gregory S. Southall, both of East Liverpool. There are also two grandchildren, Elizabeth M. Southall and Eric S. Morris, Jr. as well as two great-grandchildren, Emily and Samuel George.

She also leaves behind a brother, T.O. Stokes, Jr., and his wife Alma, of Greensboro, North Carolina, along with many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by two sisters-in-law Lucille Southall-Curtis of East Liverpool and Yvonne Southall-Bankston, and her husband Henry, of Atlanta, Georgia.

Rev. Brenda L. Johnson, of the Sheridan AME Church, will conduct a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Friends may visit 2 hours prior to the service.

Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
