Obituary for Samuel A. Scafide

SAMUEL A. “SAM” SCAFIDE, 76

EAST LIVERPOOL – Samuel A. “Sam” Scafide entered into his eternal rest at 2:25 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester. A resident of St. Clair Avenue in East Liverpool, Sam was 76.

He was born in East Liverpool on July 31, 1938, and was a son of the late Anthony J. and Jennie Gulutz Scafide. A 1957 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he was a “true blue Potter”, always staying active in area youth sports. He had coached for many years with local attorney Mike Kapp, and for over 12 years, had assisted Coach Nick Aloi with the ELHS Potters basketball team.

Sam had been the owner and operator of Scafide Markets until his retirement in 1994, following the sale of the last store. But beyond that, Sam was a follower of God and devoted his life to caring for the sick and the less fortunate. He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church, where he served as Lay Commissioner and Leader of Prayer. At East Liverpool City Hospital, many patients and visitors alike knew him as a faithful volunteer in Pastoral Care, and he had also served on the Board of the Tri-State Chaplaincy at ELCH. For over twelve years, he served on the Youngstown Regional Catholic Board, and was on the Advisory Board for Catholic Charities in East Liverpool. He had also served as spiritual volunteer for MVI Hospice in Youngstown and Hospice of the Valley in Steubenville, and belonged to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, striving to grow spiritually by offering individual service and support to those in need.

A member of the Sons of Italy, Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge #258, Sam was a charter member and President of the Planning Commission, and on the Zoning Board, and was also a charter member and current President of the Community Improvement Corporation. He was a friend to all, and would be one of the first to lend a hand when it was needed the most.

On November 4, 1967, he married the former Jane Schneider, and he was a devoted husband to her until her death on August 16, 2011.

Sam is also preceded in death by his sister, Ann Maria Amato, who passed away on September 11, 2013.

Surviving are numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers-in-law, whom he loved as they loved him.

Friends may visit with the family at the Dawson Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Parish Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., with Father Peter Haladej officiating. Following the Mass, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship and lunch.

Sam will be laid to rest at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
