Obituary for Kay Francis Waters (Reed)

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Former East Liverpool resident Kay Francis Reed Waters, passed away at her home in Magna, Utah, Saturday, March 7, 2015 while surrounded by her family. She was 83.

Born in East Liverpool, May 20, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth Mahoney Reed. She lived most of her life in this area and was a member of the Sheridan AME Church. She would later hold membership at the St. Paul AME Church in Columbus, Ohio and the Trinity AME Church in Salt Lake City.

Following high school, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where she was a Sergeant 1st Class. She returned to East Liverpool and worked as a supervisor in the meter maid department for the city. She also worked at the former Crucible Steel Company as a crane operator and then for the American Red Cross as a donor analyst until her retirement.

An avid civil rights activist, she was active locally with the NAACP. She also was a leader of the Camp Fire Girls Kinoka Council for 14 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Henry Waters on February 10, 1974. She was also preceded in death by a son, Clark Elliot Waters, three sisters, Mabel (Reed) Dorsey, Virginia (Reed) Douglas, and Geraldine (Reed) Cox, and three brothers, Clarence Reed, Jr., Raymond Reed and Jessie Reed.

She is survived by her two daughters, Silk Yvette Waters-Ferreira and Sally Kay Waters, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, and two sons, Robert Henry Waters, Jr. of Salt Lake City and Mark Edward Waters, and his wife Dennette Lacour-Waters, of Akron. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

There are two sisters surviving, JoMarva (Reed) Williams of East Liverpool and Janet (Reed) Latimer of Lorain, Ohio, as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Associate Pastor Patricia Williams and Pastor Calvin McCoy will conduct a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
