Obituary for Ruby Barcus (Black)

Ruby Barcus, 95, passed away on the Reflections Unit at Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation on Thursday evening, May 7.

Born on September 30, 1919 in Smiths Ferry, Pennsylvania, she was the youngest of nine children born to Allen and Bertha Mae Lambright Black.

She and her husband raised their family in Beechwood and then moved to Pennsylvania Ave. She remained there until entering CrossRoads Assisted Living Center at Beaver Creek where she had many friends. She has lived the last two years in Kentucky, close to family and seven great great-granddaughters who adored her.

Ruby worked at the Dixie Diner and Hall China. During WWII, she worked at Treadmill for a deployed soldier and when he returned, she then worked at Crucible Steel until the war ended.

She was preceded in death by her husband, D.L. Barcus, (Bud), two sons, Terry and Jerry, three sisters and five brothers.

Surviving is a daughter, Merry Lou Metz, (Carl) of Danville, two sons, John Barcus of Parksville, Kentucky, and Don Barcus of Payson, Arizona. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Barcus, Keith Spencer, Carl, Jeff and Tim Metz. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Keenagers Class at Northside Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elevator Building Fund at her beloved Northside Church, where she served as an original founding member and the first treasurer.

Friends may visit on Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with Pastor Larry Rose of Northside Church. Burial will follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
