Obituary for Doris J. Sanford (Goodman)

Doris J. “Dorie” Goodman Sanford, formerly of East Liverpool, passed to her eternal home just after midnight on Thursday, May 28, 2015. Mrs. Sanford had been residing with her daughter, JoDell Simons and grandson, Tyler Simons in Palmyra, Pennsylvania for the past year.

Mrs. Sanford was born in East Liverpool on May 18, 1928 to the late James H. Goodman and Ruby Woods Goodman. Her husband of 64 years was the late Delmas A. Sanford who preceded her in death on May 15, 2011. Jeffrey Craig Sanford and Kevin A. Sanford were sons who also preceded her in death in 1951 and 1998 respectively.

A 1946 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Dorie was a proud member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and its Olde Guard. She also was a member of the Methodist Church until she married, when she then became an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Sanford led in various ministries as missions, children’s ministry including the Children’s Choir. She also led a ministry in her own home for several years with Child Evangelism Fellowship Bible clubs. Doris sang in the adult choir and was the behind the scenes coordinator for the various missions trips and ministries she shared with her husband. Doris was known for hosting various groups in her home who were involved in ministry. Many were the recipients of her home cooked meals, for which she was especially known.

Mrs. Sanford leaves three daughters: JoDell Sanford Simons of Palmyra, PA; Renee Sanford Willoughby and her husband, David Willoughby, of Silver Spring, MD; and Jelayne Sanford Dray of Ashland, OH. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Christie Sanford, as well as six grandchildren: Branson Willoughby, Christopher Sanford and his wife, Justina Sanford; Heather Peters and her husband, Joseph Peters; Tyler Simons; Drew Dray and his wife, Kiley Dray; and Brock Dray. There are four great-grandchildren: Madison and Faith Peters, and Aiden, Henley, and Maci Dray. Dorie also leaves behind sisters-in-law Delores Goodman and Emily Gabbert. She was preceded in death by her five brothers: Ray Goodman, Sr., Kenneth Goodman, James Goodman, Bob Goodman, and Keith Goodman.

Services will be held at the Dawson Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with Dr. Robert B. Sylvies of the First Church of the Nazarene, presiding. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday, where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m., and also for an hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Dorie will be laid to rest beside her husband and sons at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
