Obituary for James A. Watson Sr.

James A. “Jim” Watson, Sr., born and raised in East Liverpool, passed away on Saturday evening, June 6, 2015 at the age of 73 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, following a lingering illness.

He was a son of the late Delmas Clay and Zola Barrett Watson, born on December 22, 1941. A 1961 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he was a proud “Potter” and loved attending class events and the All-School Reunions.

Jim had worked for some time as a machinist at the former Crucible Steel Corporation, but had primarily been a maintenance supervisor at Homer Laughlin China for many years, retiring in 2010. A natural adventurer, Jim especially loved fishing, hunting, target shooting, wood carving, and had been a lifetime member of the Tri-State Coonhunters and Sportsmen Association, where he enjoyed weekly gatherings with fellow outdoorsmen. He loved the freedom that came with riding his motorcycle across the country, especially with his longtime companion, Kathy Persohn on the seat behind him.

On August 7, 1980, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, the former Sandra J. “Sandy” Buchheit Watson. He had lovingly cared for their two sons throughout her lengthy illness and following her death.

In addition to his companion, Kathy, Jim is also survived by his two sons: James A. Watson, Jr. of LaCroft, and Jeffrey C. Watson and his wife, Kris, of East Liverpool. Jim also leaves behind three grandchildren: Zachary Watson, Kali Watson and Vincent James Watson, as well as a great-grandson, Gunnar Watson. “Pappy Jim” will also be missed by Mike Persohn, Amy Stoneburner, Anthony Persohn, and Isaac, Michelle and Jessica Stoneburner.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and his wife, was a sister, Doloras Hopper, and a brother, Charles “Chuck” Watson. Jim remained close to sister-in-law, Kitty Watson, and brother-in-law, Jack Hopper, and numerous nieces and nephews who survive.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, by family friend, Cary LeMasters. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of remembrance.

Jim will be laid to rest at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
