Obituary for Fred A. McCoy

Former Densmore Avenue resident Fred A. McCoy passed away at the home of his daughter on Carolina Avenue in Chester at the age of 93 early Monday morning, July 20, 2015. He had been in failing health for some time and now joins many loved ones who were waiting for him in Heaven.

A son of the late Benjamin H. and Elva Whittington McCoy, he was born in East Liverpool on March 24, 1922.

A graduate of East Liverpool High School, Fred was a World War II veteran who served with the U.S. Army in Europe from 1942-45. For over 30 years, he worked at the former Crucible Steel Corporation, retiring as a boiler fireman in 1982. He was a proud American, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and was a Baptist by faith. Many will remember Fred as a frequent customer at the L&B Donuts, as well as the former Camera Mart, especially during the years when he enjoyed amateur photography.

Surviving him is his daughter, Debbie Merriman and her husband, John, of Chester, as well as a son, Fred J. “Bud” McCoy and his wife, Fran, of Puyallup, WA. Two daughters-in-law, Terri McCoy and Susan Arnott also survive as well as five grandchildren: Lisa McCoy Resser; John Merriman and his wife, Bonnie; Brian Merriman and his wife, Angela; Corey McCoy; and Robert McCoy. Four great-grandchildren, Brittney Resser, Rylee Resser, John Edward Merriman and Gage Michael Merriman, also survive as well as a great-great-grandson, Vincent James.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by two sons, Randall “Randy” McCoy and Rodney “Cork” McCoy, along with a sister Verla Davis.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Robert Weber will officiate at services to be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors. Following the burial, friends and family will return to the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.
