Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Stewart (Miller)

Mary Elizabeth Stewart, formerly of Carter Street in East Liverpool, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2015 at East Liverpool City Hospital.

A daughter of the late Lawrence and Margaret Hughes Miller, she was born on May 27, 1929 in Greene Township, PA.

On June 23, 1950, she married Harold C. Stewart. They made their home on a farm in Hookstown until 1963 when they relocated to East Liverpool, where he was associated with Crook’s Furniture. Mary worked at the former Olsen’s Department Store downtown, as well as Thrifty City, and had been a sponger at Hall China for over ten years.

Mary loved flowers of all kinds, and enjoyed growing her own garden for many years. She faithfully attended Northside Community Church, and appreciated her friendships with other church members, who became like her extended family – especially after the death of her husband on December 16, 2003.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Susan Blazer and her husband, Doug, with whom she resided until the time of her illness. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Jessica Merritt and her husband, Christopher, of Sterling, VA.

Additional survivors include three sisters and one brother: Helen Miller of Brilliant, OH; Velma Goddard and her husband, Ralph, of New Alexandria, OH; Sarah Cusick and her husband, Paul, of Rayland, OH; and Earl Miller and his wife, Wilda, of Hookstown, PA. Mary was preceded in death by another brother, George Miller.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Alvin Talkington of Boyce Church, officiating. Friends may also visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband at Mill Creek Hill Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving kindness Mary received while at Calcutta Health Care Center.
