Obituary for Robert Dean McShane

Robert D. McShane passed away peacefully at the age of 81 at Calcutta Health Care Center in East Liverpool at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015. Bob had resided on Armstrong Lane for many years.

He was born on December 6, 1933 in East Liverpool, a son of the late Dean and Dorothy Poynter McShane. A 1953 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation and served until 1957. From 1961 to 1978, he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving as a gunner’s mate, primarily in Alaska.

Upon retiring from the military with honors, Bob was a security guard at Shippingport nuclear plant for eight years, and had also been a custodian for East Liverpool City Schools. In his spare time, he loved cheering for the Steelers and also for the East Liverpool Potters, and had been a faithful member of the YMCA since boyhood.

Bob was a lifetime member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, and had been an usher at one time.

He was preceded in death in 2010 by his wife, Paula Schaffhausen McShane.

Surviving is his loving wife, Julie Mason McShane, at home. They were married January 20, 2012 in Indiana.

Bob was preceded in death by his stepsons, Roeland Bernardis “Butch” Caris and Franciscus Maria Caris, as well as a sister, Donna McShane Lowe.

Also surviving is a step-son, Daniel Lydic and his companion, Whittney Perry, of East Liverpool, along with several nieces and nephews.

Services will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home, with Father Will Lawbaugh of the church as the celebrant.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Bob will be interred at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors. Following the service, family and friends will return to the Dawson Family Center for a meal and a continued time of remembrance.
