Obituary for Bernard Edward Stewart

BERNARD E. STEWART, 67

WELLSVILLE – Bernard E. “Bernie” Stewart, 67, of Kountz Avenue, former owner of Ohio Valley Security and detective agency, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2016 at Salem Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born at home in Mason, WV on August 22, 1948, a son of the late Bernard Lee and Olga Johnson Stewart. He had come to this area in the mid-50’s, and was a member of the Class of 1968 at East Liverpool High School. A proud American, Bernie served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and in the Philippines, where he received a Purple Heart with two stripes.

On July 11, 1966, he married the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Brooks Stewart, with whom he shared countless family memories. They enjoyed following grandchildren’s sporting events, riding motorcycles, listening to old country music, and being outdoors – especially watching wildlife and birds in his front yard. An avid reader, Bernie was known as one who would go out of his way to help others. He was constantly learning, and liked fixing things (even if they weren’t broken!) Most of all, he just loved being at home with his family.

Pat survives him, along with his three daughters: Lisa Rhodes and her husband, Jimmy, of Chester; Melissa Allen and her husband, Greg, of Stow, OH; and Teresa Minor and her husband, Brian, of Niles, OH. There are three grandchildren: Dustin and Madison Minor, and Logan Hawk. Another grandson, Dillon Dale Minor, preceded him in death.

Bernie also leaves behind two sisters: Ruth Newlin of Ocala, FL, and Tammy Smith and her husband, Steve, of East Liverpool. There are two nieces, Stephanie Butscher and Christie Reed, and a nephew, Jonathon Smith, and a sister-in-law, Patti Stewart of Columbus.

He was also preceded by a sister, Sheila Johnson, and by two brothers, James Stewart and John Stewart.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Monday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Bernie’s brother-in-law, Pastor Dan Crowe officiating. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veteran’s Burial Group will provide full military honors.

Following the burial, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.

Those wishing to do so may send contributions in Bernie’s name c/o Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
