Obituary for Marie Vivian Winters (Scafide)

Marie Vivian Scafide Winters, 99

CHESTER – Marie Vivian Scafide Winters, longtime resident of East Liverpool’s 4th Street, passed away Monday morning, November 7, 2016, at the Pepperberry Suites where she had been a resident for several years. She was 99.

Born in East Liverpool, July 19, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Anna Giovenco Scafide. A resident of this area all her life, she was a member of Holy Trinity Parish where she was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society, volunteered at bingo and taught CCD classes for many years.

Marie attended the former St. Aloysius School and was a member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1935. She grew up in the grocery business and, along with her family, worked at the former Scafide’s Market on 4th Street in East Liverpool. She was later active in the Lady Elks of Lodge 258 and served as its president at one time. She also was a substitute teacher at St. Aloysius School.

She enjoyed dancing, reading and dressing to the nines, and never left home without her lipstick.

Above all other things in life she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph F. Winters. The couple married October 23, 1946 and together raised two children: a daughter, Janet Anderson and her husband, Loren “Andy”, of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, and a son, R. Gary Winters and his wife, Susan, of Cincinnati.

She will be sadly missed by her five grandsons: Andrew Anderson and his wife, Christy, Zachary Anderson and his wife, Christina, Michael Anderson and his wife, Anna, Matthew Winters and his wife, Shannon, and Dan Winters; as well as seven great-grandchildren: Olivia, Leo and Audrey Winters, and Vivian, Coleman, Nils and Avielle Anderson. They will fondly remember her wonderful meatballs.

Two brothers preceded her in death, Tony Scafide and Tom Scafide.

Fr. James Lang will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial noon Saturday at the James J. Hocking Center (formerly St. Aloysius School) where friends may visit two hours prior to the service.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Peachtree Inn for a luncheon.

Private burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in care of the Carnegie Public Library, 219 E 4th St, East Liverpool, OH 43920 or a charity of one’s choice.
