Obituary for Arthur James Cloran

ARTHUR J. CLORAN, DDS, 93

COLUMBUS – Dr. Arthur J. Cloran, East Liverpool native and well-known dentist, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Worthington Christian Village in Columbus on Tuesday afternoon, March 8, 2016. He was 93.

A son of the late Dorothy Shaw and Francis J. “Mike” Cloran, he was born here on June 6, 1922. As a young boy, he attended St. Aloysius School, and was a lifelong member of the church, now Holy Trinity Parish. He was a proud 1940 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and remained faithful to his alma mater, later becoming immersed in the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association, where he was instrumental in restoring the clock tower and was known as “Captain Video” for his genuine interest in documenting virtually every alumni event.

Dr. Cloran was graduated in 1945 from The Ohio State University School of Dentistry, where he was honored in later years as a Distinguished Alumni for his invention of the Cloran Dental Orthoscopic Device which was patented for his work with quadriplegics and paraplegics. He had also been honored in 1976 with the Ohio State Alumni Association’s Citizen Award, the highest award given by the alumni, and received numerous awards and recognitions for his efforts in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

His education was followed immediately by his service in the Dental Corps with the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was a lieutenant at Cherry Point, NC. He returned to his hometown in 1947, and established a successful dental practice in the Little Building, primarily focusing on family dentistry. He worked nearly every day until the age of 80, and was an avid learner of new dental techniques. Dr. Cloran was credited with assisting local resident Doris Coutant, who had been paralyzed from polio, by developing a device which enabled her to create beautiful works of art using instruments he designed.

On April 12, 1950, Dr. Cloran married Sara “Sally” Ryan Cloran, also an East Liverpool native, and the two were a mainstay in the community until her death on December 13, 2006. Among many other groups and civic organizations, they were members of the East Liverpool Country Club, where Dr. Cloran enjoyed golf and was Club Champion numerous times. He also played in the Ohio Amateur multiple years, and served on the Board of Governors of the Ohio Golf Association. He and Sally also gave generously of their time and resources for the betterment of the area, helping to establish the ELHS Alumni Association’s scholarship fund, among many others.

Surviving him are his children: Wini Cloran of Powell, OH; Courtenay Deslauriers and her husband, Edward, of Plano, TX; and Michael Cloran D.D.S. of Marion, OH. There are two grandchildren as well: Emelie Deslauriers of Westerville, OH, and Sara Cash and her husband, Sterling, of Plano. He is also survived by his older brother, Thomas Cloran of East Liverpool, and was preceded in death in May, 2015 by his sister, Mary Cloran Smith, who had resided in Beaver, PA.

A ¬¬¬Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be observed at Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, with Father Melvin Rusnak presiding. Friends and family will then gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.

Dr. Cloran will be laid to rest beside his wife at Riverview Cemetery.
