Obituary for Berta Baxter

Berta G. Sayre Baxter, 97

Berta G. Sayre Baxter, age 97, of East Liverpool, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 17th, 2023. She passed away peacefully in North Canton Ohio where she was cared for by her daughter Marian and recent late husband Joey Henderson. She was born as the youngest of seven children on September 8, 1925 in East Liverpool Ohio to her late parents Herbert K. and Carrie Roush Sayre. Her siblings preceded her in death: Harold Sayre, Arvesta Whealdon, Charles Sayre, Margaret Lauhon, Susan Evans and Evelyn Gamble.

On June 16th, 1948, Berta married Kenneth R. Baxter and together they built a loving home. Kenneth preceded her in death after 56 years of marriage on August 16th, 2004. Together they leave behind their four children; Elizabeth (Thomas) Ayres of Southampton, NY; Martha (Dean) Elwood of Chattanooga, TN; Marian (late husband Joey) Henderson of North Canton, OH; Kenneth Baxter Jr. of Dalton, GA. One of the many joys of her long life was the ability to share in the lives of their 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, as well as countless nieces and nephews.

Berta will always be remembered for her lifelong commitment to First Evangelical Presbyterian Church. There she played a large role in showing Christ’s love through the women and children’s ministries as well as the countless meals and hospitality events. And with Christ at the center of her life, she also found great joy not only visiting and making memories with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren but also her many friends and neighbors. Berta was known by those close to her for the meals and baked goods that she happily shared with friends, family or anyone that stopped by.

Services will be held at Dawson Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27th with Rev. Gregory Mead of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church officiating. Prior to the service friends may visit beginning at 12:30 PM until the time of the service. Berta will be laid to rest next to her husband at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Evangelical Presbyterian Church .
