Obituary for Gordon "Griff" Griffiths

C. Gordon Griffiths, Jr., 90

EAST LIVERPOOL – C. Gordon Griffiths, Jr., of East Liverpool, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at Pepperberry Suites in Chester. He was 90.

Born in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, August 23, 1930, he was a son of the late C. Gordon Griffiths, Sr. and Elizabeth Oates Griffiths. He moved to this area in 1939 and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska. “Griff” always wanted to be a carpenter and from 1960 to 1970 worked for the former Potters Construction. He then started Corolla Construction Company in 1970 and became known as the premiere residential and commercial builder in the area. He built and renovated many landmark properties including the Hot Dog Shoppe, the original McDonalds in Calcutta, the Dawson Funeral Home and countless beautiful homes.

He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union #171. A member of the Military Vehicles Preservation Association, he enjoyed restoring World War II era military vehicles. Griff loved to display his vehicles at community events and parades and would often gather friends and family to drive them.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Lee Wolf Griffiths. The couple married August 22, 1953. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carla Sue Griffiths, a sister Carrie Williams, and a brother, Attorney Ray Griffiths.

Left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Gretchen Claypool and her husband, Neil, of East Liverpool, and a grandson, Griffin Claypool of Columbus, Ohio. He also leaves a sister, JoAnn Griffiths Hathaway and her husband, Jim, of Fairfax Station, Virginia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank those that have cared for Griff: the staff at Senior Link, Carter Home Health Care, Valley Hospice and Pepperberry Suites.

A private family funeral service was conducted Thursday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group conducted military honors.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.
