Obituary for Charles Elliot Hartman

Charles Elliot Hartman, Sr., 95

POLAND, OH – Charles Elliot Hartman, Sr., of Hanoverton, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the Hospice House in Poland following a brief illness. He was 95.

Born in Wilkins Township, Pennsylvania, March 18, 1921, he was a son of the late Carl and Elizabeth Snyder Hartman.

A veteran of WWII, he served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. Charles was active in many battles and campaigns including the Air Offensive – Japan, China Defensive, China Offensive, New Guinea, West Pacific, South Philippine, Luzon, Western Pacific and Ryukus-Okinawa. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 7 Bronze Stars, the Victory Medal WWII and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star.

He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he studied business. He would then work for Westinghouse as a systems analyst until his retirement. He was Catholic by faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Karla Stelter of Wampum, Pennsylvania, and Laura Zeh of Hanoverton, as well as two grandchildren: Ciera Zeh and Christopher Walter Stelter.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Sonny” Hartman, Jr.

The Dawson Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Mr. Hartman will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted.

His family will celebrate his life at the family home.
