Obituary for Dorothy J. "D.J." (Garren) Poole

EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO – Dorothy J. “D.J.” Poole, 94, of East Liverpool passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at East Liverpool City Hospital.

Dorothy was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on June 9, 1928 a daughter of the late Clarence A. and Edna M. (O’Hanlon) Garren. She was a graduate of East Liverpool High School class of 1946. Dorothy worked for over 50 years in the shoe business ending her career as a shoe buyer for D.M. Ogilvie. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church where she served on the altar and rosary society in the past. Dorothy was also a member of East Liverpool Junior Women’s Club, East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and Triangle Senior Citizens. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, drinking wine and spending time with her family.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her husband Robert W. Poole; grandson Dustin R. Poole and two brothers John and William Garren.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons Robert Poole, Jr. and his wife Joann of Perkasie, PA and David Poole and his wife Linda of East Liverpool; three daughters Judy Smit and her husband Thomas of East Liverpool, Barbara Poole, Ph.D. of Kyle, TX and Stephanie Poole Martinez, Ph.D. and her husband Chris of Buda, TX; seven grandchildren Megan Poole of Midland, PA, Thomas Smit and his wife Wendy of York, ME, Joshua R. Walker of East Liverpool, Amanda J. Charles and her husband Jonathan of Pittsburgh, PA, Melinda “Mindy” Kiehl and her husband Tom of Erie, PA, Ryan Poole and his wife Susan of Erie, PA and Anya Martinez of Buda, TX; five great grandchildren Liv Poole of Midland, PA, Emlyn Charles of Pittsburgh, PA, Addisyn “Addi” Charles of Pittsburgh, PA, Rylie Poole of Erie, PA and Sadie Poole of Erie, PA and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Monday where the family will be present from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Anna Mae Covert of Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church will conduct a service at the Funeral Home on Monday at 12 p.m. Burial at Riverview Cemetery.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a time of fellowship.
