Obituary for Florence "Flo" Calhoun

FLORENCE E. “FLO” CALHOUN, 90

EAST LIVERPOOL – Longtime area resident Florence E. “Flo” Calhoun, of East Liverpool, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021. She was 90.

Born in Lorain, OH on December 6, 1930. Flo was graduated from Albion High School in Pennsylvania in 1949 and moved to East Liverpool with her family the following year. She began work at the former Acme Pottery in Wellsville, where she remained until 1960. When Hill’s Department Store opened its doors in 1964, Flo became a faithful employee until years later when she went to work for the Dream Shoppe in Chester and then in East Liverpool.

Known throughout the area for her expertise in cookie baking, Flo taught many classes in cake decorating and candy making, and was well known for her beautiful wedding cakes and cookies. She took great joy in her creations until her Parkinson’s would not let her hold a knife to ice the cakes, but she was able to bake some of her grandchildren’s favorite sugar cookies.

A member of Northside Community Church, she was involved in the Women’s Outreach as well as the Keenagers Sunday School class. Flo had also attended 1st Assembly of God at one time, where she was involved in the Women’s Ministries. In addition, she belonged to the Ethel Chambers service group and the Heritage Quilt Club in Calcutta.

In addition to her parents, Flo was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Calhoun, whom she married on May 20, 1951. He passed away on April 24, 1989.

Surviving are her loving daughters, Peggy and her husband, John, and Janice Lee. In 2011, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Buchheit and a son-in-law, James Lee.

Flo cherished her grandchildren: Alison, Megan, Rebecca, Kate, Ross, Grant & Amanda. There are ten great-grandchildren.

In addition, Flo is survived by a sister, Clarice Cronin. A sister, Alice Owen predeceased her. Flo's sister Kathy Amodie passed away May 6, 2021. There are also numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends who will miss her dearly, as Flo was kind and good to every person she encountered.

Pastor Larry Rose will conduct a memorial service at the Northside Community Church at 11:00 am Saturday, May 15th.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested for the Northside Community Church.
