Obituary for Gary Allen Reed

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son, brother and friend Gary Allen “Moose” Reed, 65, left his earthly cares behind and went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 1, 2017, while a patient at Acuity Specialty Hospital in Weirton. His devoted wife and best friend, Betsy, was there with him, as she had been throughout his lengthy illness.

Gary and Betsy resided on West Sixth Street together, and she said he had been the “keeper of her stars” and her sweetheart since their marriage on January 6, 1989.

He was born in Beaver, PA on September 13, 1951, a son of the late Ruel and Ida Burchett Reed. Gary was a 1970 graduate of Beaver Local High School.

A dedicated worker, Gary had worked for Fithian Burial Vault at one time, then later spent more than 30 years employed at 3M and then Terumo in Oklahoma and Michigan, where he made parts for heart and lung machines, before he returned to this area.

Gary liked watching wrestling on television, listening to country music, and enjoying the company of the family cat, Callie.

He will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to Betsy, he is survived by a son, Christopher; grandsons, Nathan and Josh; mother-in-law, Betty Ward; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Suzanne and John Mercer and their sons, Joseph, Ethan and Jude; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death was a sister, Bernice Johnston, and three brothers, Donald “Buddy” Reed, Wayne Reed, Sr., and Dale Reed.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Paul Treese will officiate at a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Following the burial family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.

Gary’s family would like to thank the staffs of East Liverpool City Hospital, UPMC Mercy and Acuity Specialty Hospital, for their compassionate care of Gary during his illness.

Those wishing to do so may make contributions in Gary’s name to: RP Foundation, 7168 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, Missouri 21046.
