Obituary for Gaylord Wayne Cox Sr.

East Liverpool, Ohio- Rev. Dr. Gaylord W. Cox, Sr., 93, of Dresden Avenue went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 8:00 pm at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Born July 18, 1926 at West Finley, Pennsylvania he was a son of the late Howard J. and Sadie Harsha Cox. Pastor Cox moved to this area in 1967 to start his ministry with the Grace Baptist Temple on Dresden Avenue. He began his ministry in 1965 in Wellsville, Ohio commuting back and forth from Minerva, Ohio with his family to lead the congregation of the Wellsville Baptist Temple. Two years later he started the church that he would pastor until 2018 on Dresden Avenue. He was the recipient of both an Honorary Bachelor’s Degree and a Doctorate conferred on him by Crown College in Tennessee.

Pastor Cox headed up many ministries within the church including Sunday School Programs, Summer Bible School, Church Bus Ministry, Youth Activities, Mission Outreach Programs, Hospital visitations, Jolly Sixties, Summer Church Camp Ministries, and he led groups to the Holy Land on ten separate occasions.

Pastor Cox was a veteran of the United States Navy during WWII serving on the USS Franklin CV-13.

On August 25, 2006 he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Daunice Jean Anderson Cox, whom he married July 11, 1948.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Tenney and her husband, Michael of Grove Port, Ohio, and Lois Jean Donley and her husband, Steve missionaries of Tuk, North West Territory, Canada; and two sons, Rev. G. Wayne Cox and his wife Jean of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Gary Cox and his wife, JoAnn of Houston, Texas.

There are twelve grandchildren: and 27 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Marguerite Bell, Betty Barnhart and Vi Murphy; and five brothers, Eugene Cox, Paul Cox, Donald Cox, Chuck Cox and Norman Cox.

Calling Hours for anyone who would like to say their final goodbye to a soldier, not only a World War II veteran of the US Navy serving on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin CV-13, but more importantly, a Soldier of the Cross will be on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio and again one hour prior to the service. Gaylord’s son Wayne will conduct a funeral service for his father at 11:00 am Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Immediately following the service family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center.
