The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Hazel Cannon can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.

Thank you, Hazel

Nearly 40 years ago, Hazel gave me my first job opportunity working at the East Liverpool Dairy Queen, formerly located on Dresden Avenue. I believe my starting wage was $1.65 an hour, but what a fantastic and liberating experience to receive my very first paycheck! My mom and I had struggled financially for years, living pretty frugally, so to have some spending money to purchase more than just the necessities was very satisfying. Being able to contribute toward our household expenses also allowed me to feel more like a responsible adult -- all of that because Hazel was willing to take a chance on me.

Hazel, herself, was hard working and also generous. Whenever a new Dairy Queen or Coke promotion was introduced, she always gave us pitchers, drinking glasses, salt & pepper shakers, T-shirts, etc.  She always tried to be very accommodating to the scheduling needs of a group of high school girls so that we were able to both work and participate in normal teenage activities.

During the late 70s & 80s there were a group of us that worked together and in many ways became something of a work family - an atmosphere that Hazel seemed to encourage and enjoy. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs, all the while learning important customer and public-relation skills that we later were able to transfer to other areas of employment. To this day, I can still make change without being reliant on a cash register.

Sadly as the years wore on and other responsibilities came into play, I drifted away from Hazel but I always be grateful to her for giving me my first job and so much more.
