Obituary for Henri Jean Tivis

Henri Jean Tivis, 72

EAST LIVERPOOL – Henri Jean Tivis, of East Liverpool, passed away Thursday morning, July 4, 2019 at the Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester. She was 72.

Born in Pittsburgh, November 16, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Fannie Lee Hill Carter. She was a member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1966.

For 45 years, Henri Jean worked the mutual line as a teller at Waterford Park which later became Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort. She accepted the Lord as a child and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. As a teenager, she was raised in the Second Baptist Church in East Liverpool along with the rest of her family. She was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church for 50 years where she was a deaconess, church secretary, youth director, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the choir. She also taught Vacation Bible School. For many years, she was active with the Ohio Valley Missionary Union.

She is survived by her husband, Lenwood C. Tivis, whom she married 1968. She also is survived by a daughter, Gwen Gibson and her husband, Kenny, of Akron, and a son, Lenwood C. Tivis, II, of East Liverpool, as well as five grandchildren: Vanessa, Velinda, Marquea, Raelynn and Leniya, as well as two great-grandchildren: Arianna and Zoey.

She also is survived by seven sisters: Marlene Carter, Gail Harper, Linda Smith, Cheryl Carter, Jacqueline Pendleton (Charles), Phyllis Craig (David) and Toni Silva-Jeter (Jessie), along with a brother, Henry Carter, along with one aunt, Bertha Hill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Araina Diane Tivis, and a sister, Kay Green.

Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Reverend Darrell Kendall will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the New Hope Baptist Church for fellowship.
