Obituary for Herbert L Sell

Longtime area mechanic Herbert L. Sell, 88, passed away at his home on Vernon Street in East Liverpool at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2016. Helen, his wife of nearly 68 years, was at his side.

He was born at his home in Carroll County, OH, on November 1, 1927, one of eleven children of the late Charles Theodore and Ruth Beckley Sell. When Herb was 10, the family moved to the East Liverpool area after his father took a job in a local pottery. Herb began working soon afterward, at the former Wilson Battery, where he developed a keen interest in mechanics. He was later associated for many years at Carroll Motors in East Liverpool before becoming a self-employed automotive electrician.

He was a 1947 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and married his high school sweetheart, the former Helen Kennedy, on August 7, 1948. During the Korean War, Herb served with the U.S. Army Ordinance Division in Alabama, where he taught propulsion missile repair. He and Helen resided there for two years before returning to this area to raise their family. Although they did enjoy traveling over the years, they were happiest when they were at home.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Herb had served as a councilman, was Sunday School Superintendent, and had served on the property committee at one time. He had also been a member of the Elks Lodge #258 for many years. In his spare time, Herb loved working in his shop, and had crafted mantel clocks and other wooden items for family and friends.

His loving wife, Helen survives at home, along with his son, Jeffrey A. “Jeff” Sell and his wife, Cristine, of East Liverpool. There are three cherished grandchildren: Abbie Miller and her husband, Brian, of East Liverpool; Jennifer Bowyer, also of East Liverpool; and Kellie Campbell and her husband, Isaac, of LaCroft.

Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren: Kamdin Miller, Baleigh Campbell, Asher Campbell, Anistyn Campbell, Finley Campbell, Beckham Campbell, Remington Campbell, Karsyn Bowyer and Kolsen Bowyer. Also surviving are two step-grandsons, Ryan McMillan and his wife, Emily, and Trevor McMillan and his wife, Erika, as well as two step-great-grandchildren, Carter and Claire McMillan.

Herb also leaves behind two sisters, Agnes Sell and Mary Green, both of East Liverpool; and three brothers, Charles “Chink” Sell and his wife, Judy, of East Liverpool; Tommy Sell and his wife, Clara, of Nebraska; and Robert J. Sell and his wife, Janet, of Toronto.

Preceding Herb in death were four brothers and a sister: Ronald “Doc” Sell, Roy “Dizz” Sell, John Sell, Eugene Sell and Evelyn Curtis.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, where a funeral service will be conducted at noon. Rev. Eric Edwards will officiate.

Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the church.
