Obituary for James Thomas Cunningham

James Thomas “Jim” Cunningham, 87, peacefully passed away in the presence of his family following a lingering illness at 10:43 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Jim had been residing at Calcutta Health Care Center recently but had lived for many years on Ohio Avenue in East Liverpool.

He was a son of the late Perry and Ada Belle Jackson Cunningham, born in East Liverpool on April 26, 1930. A 1948 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he was proud of his membership in the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. He was a devoted follower of Christ and had been a member of Boyce Methodist Church. For many years, he sang in the church choir and the men’s quartet, and had been a church board member. He also enjoyed playing church softball and volleyball in his younger days.

Jim worked for over 37 years as a street service man at Columbia Gas of Ohio, and had been a Union representative with the United Mine Workers. He was humble and kind, and quietly helped others without any thought of recognition or thanks.

Surviving him are his children: Lisa Jeanne Reneau and her husband, David, of Jacksonville, FL; Glenn Campbell Cunningham and his wife, Janet, of Manvel, TX; and Kevan Cunningham and his wife, Penny, of East Liverpool. There are six grandchildren: Toby Hayward, Cameron Reneau, Caitlyn Reneau, Erin Weber and her husband, Josh, Megan Cunningham, and Ryan Cunningham. There are two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Reagan Weber, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and his longtime companion, Vallie Fiorello.

He was preceded by two sisters, Virginia Bryson and Wanda Hooker, and also two brothers, Kenny Cunningham and Glenn Cunningham. Jim was also preceded in death by his former wife, Norma Jean Campbell.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Saturday, July 29, where the family will be present from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jim’s nephew, Pastor Robert Hooker will conduct a service at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park. The family and friends will then gather at Northside Church for a continued time of fellowship.
