Obituary for Jane E. Winland

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – Jane E. Winland, 79, of New York, formerly of East Liverpool, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Jane Ellen Winland was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on April 29, 1942, the daughter of the late Fred and Ruth T. (Taggart) Winland. She attended East Liverpool High School, Class of 1960, received her BA from American University in Washington, D.C., majoring in international affairs and journalism, and her Masters of Library Science from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Winland worked for IBM in Gaithersburg, MD before assuming a position in 1971 as a reference librarian at the Watson Library of Business and Economics at Columbia University in New York. Over the course of 48 years at Columbia, Jane served as head of the Business and Economics Library, Director of the Libraries’ Social Sciences Division, and ultimately Director of the Science and Engineering Library, in the planning and design of which she played a critical role. During her library career she also served as acting head of numerous libraries and departments, including Human Resources and Access Services. Jane retired from Columbia University Libraries in March 2019.

One of Jane’s many strengths was bringing together colleagues from Columbia University and similar institutions. She was instrumental in launching the Reference Symposium that Columbia Libraries hosted for many years, designed for the sharing of program development and common challenges among major academic and public libraries. Jane also founded two important professional organizations during her time at Columbia: Academic Business Libraries Directors, which is now an international organization, and the Science Technology Library Leaders (STLL).

Ann Thornton, the Assistant Provost and University Librarian at Columbia, has written, “Known for mentoring numerous colleagues who had successful careers of their own, Jane was a courageous leader and a truth-teller who was unafraid of being the dissenting opinion on an issue. Jane was an avid reader with a curious mind, and she was a supportive friend to many. She is deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.”

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Allen Foresta, whom she married on June 17, 1983. Other survivors include her sister-in-law Christie Ruple and nieces Leigh Whitney Ruple and Courtney Claire Ruple.

A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery in late April or early May 2022. Arrangements entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home.
