Obituary for John Murphy

John Albert Murphy, 83

EAST LIVERPOOL - John Albert Murphy, of East Liverpool, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2020 following a sudden illness. He was 83.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, July 18, 1937, he was a son of the late Kenneth Dale Murphy Sr. and Ruth Millicent Buck Murphy. He was a member of the Jefferson Union High School Class of 1955 and attended College of Steubenville and later Kent State University. He was employed as the store manager of the Western Auto Supply Company in Canton, Ohio. He later transferred to this area in 1970 where he managed the former Kroger Grocery Store and made East Liverpool his home ever since. He was then employed by Leaseway Transportation.

At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served nine years as an active member of the Reserves and U.S. Army where he was a Sergeant First Class. He was a member of the American Legion Post 888. He was also a member of the Lions Club for over 30 years and was presented a Melvin Jones Fellowship for dedicated humanitarian services by the Lions Club International Foundation.

John was a devoted husband and father. He never said no to anyone asking or needing help and enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors. John enjoyed gardening, the stock market, and working in his workshop.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne Lois Newton. The couple married November 18, 1961 at the Canton Christian Tabernacle by family friend Reverend Paul Sorensen. There are three: children Deborah Murphy of Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, David Murphy and his wife, Carol of Olathe Kansas, and Doris Cox and her husband, Lee of The Villages, Florida. There are seven grandchildren: Nathan and Aaron Greenawalt, Ian and Sarah Cox, and Eric, Alexander, and Yvaine Murphy.

He also leaves a sister Margaret Cypher and her husband, Jeffrey, of Dearborn, Michigan, and a brother, Carl Murphy and his wife, Gerrie, of Murrieta, California.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Dale Murphy, Jr.

A private family service will be conducted at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.
