Obituary for John F. "Jack" Shawke

SALEM, OHIO – John F. “Jack” Shawke, 88, of Columbiana passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at Blossom Nursing Home in Salem.

Jack was born in Wellsville on April 16, 1932 a son of the late John J. and Frances D. (Brant) Shawke. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School class of 1950. Jack was a Navy veteran proudly serving his country during the Korean War as a boiler technician petty officer 3rd class on the USS Sabine. He retired from Ohio Bell in December of 1990 after 35 years of service where he worked as a lineman, an apparatus technician and in the central office. Jack was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served on the parsonage committee, nominating committee and administration board. He was also a member of Riddle Lodge 315, East Liverpool Chapter 100, Keramos Council 95 and Pilgrim Commandery 55.

Preceding John in death were his wife, whom he married July 3, 1954, Marlene A. (Bertschy) Shawke and brother Richard Wyman Shawke.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister-in-law Nila Jane Barrett and her husband Robert of Columbiana; brother-in-law Robert Bertschy and his wife Berlydene of East Liverpool; five nieces Amy Jackson and her husband Daryl of Wellsville, Catherine Green of Louisville, OH, Nila Jo Lawrence of Olmstead Falls, OH, Karen Bertschy of East Liverpool and Lisa Carney of Canton, OH and three nephews Richard Shawke, Jr. of East Liverpool, Robert Barrett, Jr. and his wife Shelly of Wapakoneta, OH and John Bertschy of Lisbon.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday where the family will be present from 12 to 2 p.m. Pastor Stephen Knisely will conduct a funeral service Wednesday 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery where Tri State Veterans Burial Group will provide military honors. Riddle Lodge 315 will conduct a Masonic service Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. In compliance with Ohio state regulations with concerns of the COVID-19 virus masks must be worn at all times in the funeral home.
