Obituary for John Carl Stewart

East Liverpool, Ohio- John Carl Stewart of Canton Street passed away Monday, March 6th, 2023 peacefully and unexpectedly at his residence.

Born at home in Chester, West Virginia on August 23rd, 1949, he was a son of the late Donald D. and Goldie G. Logston Stewart. A lifetime area resident, John was retired from the East Liverpool Fire Department after 31 years of service to the city.

At age 13 he and his brother began caddying at the East Liverpool Country Club. He worked at the People’s Drug Store during his high school years. After graduating from East Liverpool High School in 1967, he worked for Lynn Ambulance. On September 3rd,1968 he enlisted in the United States Army serving in Viet Nam during that wartime. He was a member of the Americal Division 196th Light Infantry Brigade Charlie Company 2-1. During the war, John was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his injury during the Battle of Hiep Duc in August of 1969. After John was wounded he was transferred to Fort Knox, Kentucky and served as the personal driver for the base General.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Infanti Stewart, whom he married May 13th, 1971, at home. There are three sons, James Stewart, Matthew Stewart and Nathan Stewart all of East Liverpool.

In addition, he leaves behind three grandchildren, Brandon and his wife Kim, Tara and her husband, Drew and Travis and his wife, Renee; eight great-grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as PeePaw, Aleia, Eddie, Emersyn, Brayden, J.T., Lyla, Hannah and Preston; two sisters, Donna Smallwood of Salem, Ohio and Gloria Devon of East Liverpool; one brother, Keith Stewart of Anchorage, Alaska and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, John was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Lee Lingenfelter and Sue Ann Nelson; and one brother, Phil Stewart.

Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio. Pastor Paul Holler, John’s nephew, will officiate a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Tri-State Burial Group.

Immediately following the service family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center.
