CALCUTTA, OHIO – Leonard Raymond Mullett, 92, of Stagecoach Road, loving father, husband and grandfather, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021. He was born on August 31, 1928, in Salem, Ohio, the son of the late Albert and Valois Mullett.
He graduated from Sebring McKinley High School in 1946, and he was a standout baseball player at Sebring, always playing shortstop. He also played football, basketball and tennis in high school. He even played semi-professional baseball for a brief stint and was a Little League Baseball manager for three years. He also enjoyed bowling and won many awards in his younger years. His other love was golf, and he played as much as he could during his lifetime. He enjoyed playing in county leagues and at one time was considered one of the top golfers in the county. And when he wasn’t on the golf course, he could be found in a boat fishing, which he enjoyed immensely. He loved watching the West Virginia University Mountaineers on the football field or on the basketball court, and he enjoyed cheering for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates, too.
He attended the University of Akron studying engineering. He served with the U.S. Army’s Counter-Intelligence Corps during the Korean War from 1950-53, and he was part of an interrogation team
questioning those who crossed the Iron Curtain.
He retired as an industrial engineer having worked at Crane Co., the Ferro Corp. and the Hall China Co., from where he retired in 1990. He was a member of the American Legion Post 374 in East Liverpool, and he served as a Junior Achievement counselor in Alliance in 1963.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Erma Marie (Schrock) Mullett, who died November 21, 2012. He also was preceded in death by his younger brother, David E. Mullett, who died in 2014.
He was adored by his three daughters, Joyce (Patrick) Nutz of Warrenton, Va.; Lynn (Danny) York of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Jody (Scott) Wisbith of East Palestine. There are nine grandchildren, Erin Sexton, Hannah Miller, Gretchen Nutz and Shelby Nutz, all of Virginia; Brett Veness and Zane Veness of Indiana; and Kyle and Connor Wisbith of Ohio, and Thomas Wisbith of Dresden, Germany. There are 10 great-grandchildren, Archer and Patrick Sexton; Aaleyah, Leighton, Carter and London Veness; and Brody, Emma, Aubrey and Chloe Wisbith.
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. Pastor Norm Eckert of Beechwood Free Methodist Church will conduct a funeral service Thursday 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial at Columbiana County Memorial where Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct full military honors. In compliance with Ohio state regulations with concerns of the COVID-19 virus masks must be worn at all times in the funeral home.
