Obituary for Margaret Duffy (Wilhelm)

Margaret Wilhelm Duffy, 88

CARDIFF, CA – Margaret Wilhelm Duffy, 88, formerly of East Liverpool, passed away at 7:53 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Belmont Village in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California following a lengthy illness.

A daughter of the late Dean M. Wilhelm and Elizabeth “Bea” Laughlin Wilhelm, Margaret was born in New Kensington, PA, on May 31, 1927.

She had spent her lifetime in this area and was a 1944 graduate of East Liverpool High School. She received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Kent State University, and was also graduated from Robert Morris University’s School of Accounting in 1951.

For many years, Margaret taught remedial math and reading in the Beaver Local school district, and was also a seventh grade math teacher in the East Liverpool district until her retirement in 1990.

As a member of the National Society Children of the American Revolution she served as a paige in Washington DC. A passionate member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, she was a charter member and served as Regent of the Southwick Griscom Kinney Chapter in Columbiana County.

A member of the Monday Literary Club, she was a life member of the American Red Cross East Liverpool chapter, and Margaret had served as a board member for the East Liverpool Hospital Ladies Auxiliary at one time.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death on May 5, 2003 by her husband of 52 years, John M. Duffy. They were married on April 14, 1951.

Surviving are her two daughters: Margaret E. “Beth” Chan and her husband, James, of East Liverpool, and Ann Wood and her husband, John, of Carlsbad, CA, as well as her son, Dean Duffy and his wife, Lynda, of Los Gatos, CA.

Margaret also leaves behind her seven grandchildren: Erik Chan, Melissa Wood, Andrew Wood, Lauren Duffy, Ashlee Chan, Megan Duffy and Brian Wood.

She was also preceded by a sister, Anne Wilhelm.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 2 to 8 p.m.

Services will take place at the First United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Larry Hukill of the church, and family friend Fr. Michael Mikstay officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends will then gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.
