Obituary for Mary "Sweet" Mays

East Liverpool, Ohio- Mary C. “Sweet” Sullivan Mays, 91, formerly of Fenton Street passed away Sunday, April 23rd, 2023 at 11:30 p.m. at the Calcutta Health Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Born May 12th, 1931 at East Liverpool, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Loretta McCombs Sullivan.

Mary was retired from the former Fricano's Market after 52 years of service. She was a member of the East Liverpool Citadel of the Salvation Army. She was an avid bowler and loved sports. She loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, spending time with her family and she really loved being a Sullivan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth C. Mays, whom she married July 21st, 1949, on June 18th, 2008.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Morehead of East Liverpool and Crystal Van Rooyen of Roseburg, Oregon.

There are six grandchildren, Jimmy and Jen Morehead, Ryan and Jen Morehead, Shannon Mason, Cory Mason, Ryan Gbur and Rachel and John Briscoe; and sixteen great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

In addition, she also leaves behind one sister, Jean Traina and her husband, John of Wellsville, Ohio; one brother, Robert Sullivan of Wellsville; and her son-in-law, Steve Smalley of Chester, West Virginia.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one daughter, Vivian Smalley; one son, Keith Mays; four sisters, Carrie Meredith, Loretta Smith, Helen Coburn and Dorothy McKnight; and five brothers, George Mitcheson, John Sullivan, Thomas Sullivan, William Sullivan and Raymond “Chink” Sullivan; and her son-in-law, James Morehead.

According to Mary’s wishes there will be no public visitation or service. A Private graveside service will be held at a later date.
