Obituary for Mary Musuraca (Scott)

Mary Scott Musuraca passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the age of 99. The youngest of eight children, she was born at home in East Liverpool on August 23, 1916, a daughter of the late James B. and Nannie Fife Scott. Mary lived a life full of love and laughter and will be greatly missed.

A 1934 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Mary remained an active member of the Alumni Association, and in later years enjoyed attending the annual Olde Guard luncheon.

She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, (which she claimed from both her maternal and fraternal lineage), and was a life member of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Mary was known for her sweet nature and her kindness to others, but she will be remembered, first and foremost, as a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother.

Mary was an avid reader, enjoyed watching televised sports of all kinds, and loved a good came of cards. Rumor has it that she taught all the grandchildren how to cheat at Rummy. Mary also loved to travel and often said, “Don’t ask me if you don’t want me to go!”

She and her husband, Ralph, were married on May 5, 1939 and made their home on St. Clair Avenue for many years, where they raised their large family together. Ralph preceded her in death on August 1, 1997. As the mother of three busy athletes, Mary spent countless hours watching football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and track meets. She led many Scout troops for the boys and her girls. She was famous for her Italian dinners, even though she didn’t have an ounce of Italian blood in her.

Mary is survived by her six children: Nick Musuraca and his wife, Josie, of East Liverpool; Beth Manuel of Sierra Vista, AZ; Scott Musuraca and his wife, Michelle, of Columbus; Jim Musuraca and his wife, Erin Moriarty, of New York City; Peggy Concilla and her husband, Dennis, of Columbus; and Maria Hickey and her husband, Gordon, with whom she resided in Columbus.

She had twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, many of whom were able to visit her in recent weeks.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Rev. Mack Gray of the church will officiate at services to be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary’s honor to the East Liverpool Schools and Scholarship Fund, 16639 St. Clair Avenue, East Liverpool, OH 43920.
