Obituary for Mary Eleanor Pugh Thompson

Mary Eleanor Thompson, 93

LISBON – Mary Eleanor Pugh Thompson, longtime Calcutta resident, went to be with the Lord Monday, March 4, 2019 in the company of her beloved family. She was 93.

She was a daughter of the late Anderson and Ina Gonzales Pugh.

Born in Calcutta, March 13, 1925, in a family of three brothers and two sisters and lived there most of her life.

Mary attended Calcutta Grade School, graduated from Union High School in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Education from The Ohio State University in 1949. She later earned a certificate in business from Youngstown State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Dayton.

An educator, Mary taught at a variety of school districts throughout the area. For 27 years, she was a business instructor at East Liverpool High School until her retirement in 1986. Following her retirement, Mary was the director of the East Liverpool Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Eleanor had a great love of God. She was a member of the Presbyterian denomination for well over 80 years. At the Calcutta U.P. Church, she served at one time or another as Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Director and Secretary.

Over the years she traveled to Guatemala in Central America; Ethiopia, Africa and the mountains of Kentucky to do mission work.

For many years she was a trustee and secretary for the Calcutta U.P. Cemetery Association. Mary was a longstanding member of the East Liverpool Area YMCA Board of Trustees and was instrumental in the development of the current Calcutta and Downtown facilities.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Donald L. Thompson. The couple married December 21, 1949. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Skrinjar, along with five of her siblings.

Left to cherish her memory are her five wonderful children: three daughters, Sondra Thompson and her husband, Dick Sweat, of Wooster, Marcie Skrinjar and her husband, Steve, of Rogers, and Nancy Schmid and her husband, Tim, of Wooster, as well as two sons, Donald M. Thompson and his wife, Jodie, of Lisbon, and Phillip Gregory Thompson and his wife, Vickie, of Timnath, Colorado. There are ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren to extend her legacy.

A sister survives as well, Ina Mae Wagner of Urbana, Ohio.

Friends may visit Sunday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 8 p.m. Rev. Dr. Mary Jo Bruinooge will conduct a funeral service Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Calcutta Cemetery.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Calcutta United Presbyterian Church for fellowship.
