Obituary for Rhett Bruce Maze Sr.

East Liverpool, Ohio- Rhett Bruce Maze, Sr., 80, of Denver Street died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, May 23, 2021 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Born February 19, 1941 in Fairmont, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Herbert and Mary Ellen Sloan Maze. A lifetime area resident, he was retired from the former Crucible Steel Company in Midland, Pennsylvania. He later worked for Kent State University in East Liverpool where he also retired after many years.

A veteran of the United States Navy serving his country from 1959 to 1963 as an electronics technician aboard the USS Forrestal. Rhett was awarded numerous medals including the National Defense Medal for his service during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Mediterranean Cruise Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Rhett was extremely proud of his military service and loved sharing stories about his enlisted time.

Rhett was a natural born athlete who played many sports throughout his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Chester American Legion, and the VFW in East Liverpool. He played the guitar and the harmonica and loved music. He really enjoyed spending time with his “ Main Man”, Goofy, the cat. His quick wit and contagious laugh will be remembered by many people. Rhett was a man of faith who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include two daughters, Tamera Ann Comm of Salem, Ohio, and Melissa Dawn Maze of Wellsville, Ohio; and one son, Rhett Bruce Maze, Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Glenmoor, Ohio; and the love of his life, Nancy Brandonisio of Columbiana, Ohio.

There are six grandchildren, Tai Kotas, Rhett B. Maze III and his wife, Julie, Josh Comm and his wife, Ashley, Brittani Maze, Hunter Maze and Hannah Hayes, who he was very close to; and ten great - grandchildren, Shea, Kylie, Paityn, Eli, Lucas, Liam, Lyncon, Bailey, Gracie and Sammi.

In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Marlene French and her husband, Babe and April Beadnell; and two brothers, Ralph Maze and his wife, Barbara, and Roland Maze and his wife, Julie.

There are numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by one twin daughter, Angel Fawn Maze on August 9th, 1968, and by one sister, Mary “Jeep” Montgomery.

Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, Ohio. Pastor Norm Eckert of the Beechwood Free Methodist Church will officiate a funeral service on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord Full Military Honors

Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Everyone attending the visitation and funeral service are required to wear a mask and observe social distancing.
