Obituary for Richard Donald Martin

Lifetime area resident Richard D. Martin passed away at his home in East Liverpool on Saturday evening, December 30, 2017. He had been ill for a short time, and died in the presence of his loving family at the age of 86.

A son of the late Robert “Mose” Martin and Bernice Sinclair Martin, he was born in East Liverpool on March 21, 1931. Dick was a 1949 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and soon was drafted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952-54 and remained a proud American for the rest of his life.

Upon his return home, he married the former Frances “Fran” Pipes on July 2, 1954, and they raised their family together here. Dick enjoyed being active throughout his life, having hiked over 1200 miles on the Appalachian Trail. He became a Cub Scout leader when his sons were young, and remained involved in Boy Scouts for 41 years, where he was affectionately known as “Uncle Dick” to generations of Scouts.

Dick had been a lineman for Ohio Power Company for over 32 years, retiring in 1991. He belonged to the American Legion, and had been a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

In addition to his wife, Dick leaves behind his children: Debbie Bachey and her husband, Tom, of Cincinnati; Cathy Martin of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania; Richard Martin of East Liverpool; and David Martin and his wife, Jacquie, also of East Liverpool.

There are five grandchildren: Tom Bachey and his fiancée, Jill Cook; Jeff Bachey and his wife, Kate; Maggie Welch and her husband, Garrett; Ian Martin; and Andrew Martin. Two great-grandchildren, Rylie Martin and Beckett Bachey, also survive.

Dick was the youngest of four boys, and was preceded in death by his brothers Robert, William and Edwin.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Thursday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

A service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors. Family and friends will then gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.

Those wishing to do so may make monetary gifts in memory of Dick to the Columbiana County Special Olympics, 281 Idaho Avenue, Salem, Ohio 44460, or a charity of choice.
