Obituary for Richard D. Stewart
EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO – Richard Dean “Rich” Stewart, 84, of East Liverpool left his earthly home, surrounded by his loving family, to be with our Lord at 4:03 am Friday, November 18, 2022 at St. Mary’s Alzheimer Care Center in Columbiana, Ohio after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Rich was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on October 28, 1938 a son of the late Thomas and Elsie (Hines) Stewart. He lived as a child in Pleasant Heights, attended Pleasant Heights Grade School and was a graduate of East Liverpool High School class of 1956. Rich started working at an early age as a stock boy at Herron’s Store on Lisbon Street, followed by Loblaws/Sparkle Market on Dresden Avenue. He then worked at Crucible Steel in Midland, PA until their closure. His final job was a security guard at Shell Lubricant in Newell, WV retiring in 2017.
He and his wife enjoyed many years of summer vacation taking trips to Daytona Beach Shores, FL. He loved the Florida beaches and that started when he was in his 20’s and working at Crucible Steel. Being married at that time to his former wife, they along with their children would take a 2 or 3 week summer vacation to the Florida beaches and he had wonderful memories of those days.
Rich was a great father, strict but always involved in both of his son’s sports and helped and encouraged, as much as a father could in his daughters’ activities. Rich had a quiet nature but that would change when the subject of sports came up. It was like opening a book of knowledge. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He could remember statistics and names of players on the East Liverpool Potters football and basketball teams from years ago. When he and his sons got together it was like listening to sports on steroids and they learned a lot from him.
He also followed the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers as they were his favorite teams as a youngster. He enjoyed attending the stock car races in the 60’s, that were held at Yeager Dr. Glenmoor and Clinton, PA. Sadly all of those precious memories were erased when he was stricken with Alzheimer’s.
Rich was Christian by faith, accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior and attended the First Nazarene Church in East Liverpool as a child where he and his brother Marvin would occasionally sing duets during the morning service.
Preceding Rich in death were twin sons Kevan and Kirk; three sisters Bertha Adkins, Martha Adkins and Vallie Fiorello; two brothers Marvin and Tom Stewart and his good friend Jim Stevens.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his soulmate and loving wife of 24 years, whom he married May 1, 1998, Kayleen L. (Reed) Stewart; his children Cindy Ferlaino of Oklahoma City, OK, Rick Stewart of San Diego, CA, Tina Martin and her husband Ed of Washington, PA, Julie Reynolds and her husband Bill of Medina, OH, and Brian Stewart and his wife Dot of Pickerington, OH; stepchildren Mia Kruggel of Chardon, OH and David Shaw and his wife Juren of Grove City, OH; eleven grandchildren Jimmy, Alissa, Brad, Nick, Michaela, Danielle, Jordan, Jack, Triston, Jacob and Aubrianna; five step grandchildren Andrew, Joe, Elizabeth, Billy and Missy; four great grandchildren Jaxson, Savana, Presley and Jaxston; one step great granddaughter Vivi and by his cousins, nephews and nieces. He also leaves his two feline buddies, Lili and Tori, which he lovingly spoiled
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m. Pastor John Smith will conduct a service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial at Riverview Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the nurses, aides and staff at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Care Center and also Sanctuary Hospice for their loving care and compassion in helping ease Rich’s Journey.
