Obituary for Rita Murphy Finley (Murphy)

Rita Murphy Finley, 92, who had made her home in East Liverpool for many years, passed away at 2:52 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2016 at Providence Point in Pittsburgh. She had moved to the Pittsburgh area in 2008 to be closer to family.

A daughter of the late George R. and Theresa Hasenstab Murphy, Rita was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on May 27, 1923. She was a graduate of the Academy of the Visitation in 1941.

Rita had been a district manager of Alden’s catalog order offices in Chicago prior to her marriage on June 13, 1959 to Charles Laughlin Finley, former Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Potters Bank & Trust Company in downtown East Liverpool. The couple moved to this area in 1973 and became immersed in many local organizations and activities.

Together, they were founding members of the Old Main Society of Washington & Jefferson College and belonged to the East Liverpool Country Club, where Rita had been an avid golfer and tennis player. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was past president of the Catholic Women’s Study Club in East Liverpool, as well as the Colonial Club. Rita was also a longtime volunteer for the East Liverpool Hospital Auxiliary. She was a proud and generous supporter of the Lou Holtz Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame, where she funded the painting of the murals of towns along the Ohio River.

Chuck preceded her in death on October 6, 1999.

Rita leaves behind a sister, Anne M. Frankfurt and her husband, Edwin, of San Jose, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who were special to her.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Veronica M. McLaughlin and Margaret M. Sunderbruch, as well as three brothers, John R. Murphy, Edward J. Murphy, and George T. Murphy.

Friends will be received at the Dawson Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, where the family will gather until the time of the service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

A private burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery immediately following the service.
