CALCUTTA, OHIO – Robert O. “Buddy” Mattern, 96, of Wellsville passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Calcutta Health Care Center.
Buddy was born in East Liverpool on December 13, 1923 a son the late Robert O. and Alice (Higgins) Mattern. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School class of 1941. Buddy retired in 1983 from Crucible Steel as a foreman in the pump house. He also worked at Golden Star Dairy delivering milk. Buddy was a life member of VFW Post 374, DAV, and American Legion Post 481. Buddy proudly served his country during WW II as supply sergeant with 34th Infantry Division and received a purple heart.
Preceding Buddy in death were his wife of 73 years, whom he married August 31, 1946, Barbara J. (Bolton) Mattern; grandson Daniel Shenton; sister Audrey Rockenhauser and brother Dave Mattern.
Left to cherish his memory are four daughters, Barbara Shenton of Uniontown, Ohio, Penny Hiller and her husband Cliff of Boardman, Ohio, Linda Merriman of Calcutta, Ohio and Diana Pastorius and her husband Norman of Glen Dale, West Virginia; son, Robert O. Mattern, Jr. and his wife Ruth of Wilson, North Carolina; sister Ruth Estell of East Liverpool, Ohio; brother Kenneth R. Mattern and his wife May of Kissimmee, Florida; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and eight great great-grandchildren.
A private family service was held at the Dawson Funeral Home with Will Montgomery of the St. Clair Avenue Church of Christ officiating.
Burial was in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
